CULL RATE CALCULATIONS

My dad taught me to drive – mostly tractors, but also cars and trucks. That was before warning lights. The instrument panel included an array of gauges and my dad stressed the importance of monitoring them. Out of the blue he would ask, “When was the last time you looked at the heat gauge.” Early in my marriage, I tried this while my wife was driving. I won’t try it again. But, if you don’t measure it, you can’t manage it, and if you measure it but don’t look at the gauge, you still can’t manage it. Knowing your cull rate is the first step to managing your herd size. So, with care and discretion I ask, when was the last time you calculated your cull rate? This article will discuss the cull rate calculations for monitoring culling in your herd. The next article in the series will deal with interpretation and application of those metrics.
